Sudoku installed: first hour
By Cell Quill editorial team Current release, published June 22, 2026
After Sudoku C++ opens, prove one local game before you chase difficulties, keyboard shortcuts, or alternate package doors. Success is a filled cell on hardware you control.
Windows users should have run Sudoku-*-win64.exe and opened Sudoku C++. macOS users should know there is no release installer on this tag. Linux users should have marked the AppImage executable.
Confirm the window
You should see the start screen with one of five difficulties, and custom puzzle choices. If the window never appears, return to the Releases asset and re-download. Safe path: download safe.
- Windows: finish the win64 exe installer and open the client
- macOS: launch from Applications; Gatekeeper help is linked upstream
- Linux: chmod +x then run the AppImage
Play the first game
Pick easy. Click or press a cell. The timer starts when you release the first cell. Flag a suspect mine with the usual secondary click or the keyboard binding you prefer after one mouse game works.
Options after one win
Open Options for pencil marks and difficulty only after a completed easy game. Custom fields come next. Difficulty guide: keyboard and difficulties. First run: first run.
Write the update door
Note the exact Releases filename beside the OS version. Prefer the same Qt6 asset family for the next bump. Update guide: update uninstall.
Optional alternates later
Flatpak exist upstream and remain UNVERIFIED here. Prefer Releases first so Windows zip desks match Linux AppImage desks on one tag. Flatpak guide: Flatpak.
Keep Store Sudoku?
Keep Microsoft Sudoku if achievements still matter. Switch notes: switch. Comparison: vs Microsoft Sudoku.
Safety reminders
No third-party audit was found on pages checked for this review. Prefer GitHub Releases over portals. Safety: is it safe. Repo: GitHub.
Shared desk checklist
- One GitHub Releases URL on the ticket
- One Qt6 asset name for this OS
- One proven easy game after every reimage
Return to darkstar79/sudoku Releases when SmartScreen or Gatekeeper interrupts. Do not accept a second portal.
Lab and travel notes
Shared labs should treat the filename as part of the machine image. After every reimage, open GitHub Releases again, confirm the Qt6 asset still exists on the tag you pinned, and prove one short local game.
Travel laptops benefit from the same boring checklist: one installer door, one extract or Applications path, one note for the next bump.
- Family PCs may keep Store Sudoku beside the client
- Command-line users may add Flatpak after Releases works once
- Document UNVERIFIED where a package command was not run here
Cell Quill publishes independent install guidance. Upstream the client remains GPL-3.0 at darkstar79/sudoku. Prefer phrase-first puzzle language in titles.
When assets change
When a release drops an OS asset, pause imaging work and re-check the live list. Prefer the next tag that restores your primary filename rather than inventing a new download brand.
Keyboard play, dark difficulties, and custom puzzles are comfort settings. They come after a proven game on easy. First-hour checklists exist so desks do not chase Options menus too early.
Classroom reimage habit
After every classroom reimage, open the client from the documented path, pick easy, and clear a few cells. That habit catches vanished extract folders and AppImage execute bits that reset under new permissions.
- Re-download from Releases if the folder is gone
- Refuse Softonic mirrors during a blocked first launch
- Keep Store Sudoku only as an optional fallback
Filename discipline
Write the exact the client asset name beside the OS version before you image a lab. Prefer Qt6 when the tag ships both series so Windows zip desks match macOS source tree and Linux AppImage desks.

No winget id and no Homebrew cask were found on this review date. Flatpak remain UNVERIFIED alternates documented upstream. Prefer Releases first.
After the first proven game
Only after one easy game works should you open Options for difficulties or try a custom puzzle. First hour: installed. First run: first run. Pencil marks: keyboard and difficulties.
Keep Microsoft Sudoku only if achievements still matter. Switch notes: switch. Comparison: vs Microsoft Sudoku. Safe download: download safe.
Cell Quill maps filenames. Upstream the client remains GPL-3.0 at darkstar79/sudoku. Refuse Softonic-style mirrors even when a first launch is blocked.
